Ulcerative Colitis is a very uncomfortable condition it’s known as “UC”. Ulcerative colitis is characterized by inflammation of the large intestinewhich is commonly referred to as the colon. The colon is the organ in the body where waste and water are stored. It is is attached to the rectum which is at the end of the rectum near the anus. Patients who suffer from UC suffer from abdominal pain, bleeding in the rectum and diarrhea. These problems are caused by the presence of ulcers and swelling of the lining of the colon.

Ulcerative Colitis is a disease which falls in the same category as Crohn’s disease The disease affects both men as well as women the same and it usually starts during the adolescence and early adulthood and lasts through the senior years. Exact reasons for ulcerative colitis to occur is not known. It is believed that it may be caused by some abnormal activity in the the immune system. The disease is also thought to be genetically inherited.

There are a couple different types ulcerative colitis. One type is ulcerative proctitis, which is actually the swelling caused in the rectum. Because of this, a person feels the need to go to the bathroom very frequently. Another type of ulcerative colitis is the Proctosigmoiditis, which is an inflammation of the rectum as well as swelling of the sigmoid colon. The sigmoid colon is a small part of the colon adjacent to the rectum. This may leed to bleeding from the rectum. This also causes an urgent need to have a bowel movement frequently and this feeling is accompanied by the left side of the abdomen causing pain and cramping.
